Athlone Regatta 14 June 2008

Killorglin Rowers had another very successful regatta in Athlone at the weekend with wins in the WJ14 4X+ and WN 18 1X Pictures available here

We travelled up the night before and stayed at the excellent Coosan Cottage Guesthouse. A big thank you to Mary O’Sullivan for organising this and thanks to Tom, owner of Coosan Cottage, for looking after us all so well! (The omellettes were lovely!). The day started early with our first races being the heats of the WJ14 4X+… By the end of the morning we had qualified for the finals of the WJ14 4X+ (both crews qualifying!), WJ15 4x+, WS18 1X, WJ18 1X. The WJ16 4X+ crew narrowly missed out qualifying by 2ft as did the WJ15 4X+ B crew. Sarah Edwards rowed well in the WJ16 1X but missed out qualifying for the finals, however she was kept busy coxing the WJ14 B crew. The WN18 1X with Monika was a straight final. Not a bad morning’s work!

The finals were not for the faint-hearted, the Wj14 4X+ crew of Maeve Mc, Meabh O’Sullivan, Kelly Moriarty , Cliona Ross and coxed by Agneiszka, beat Tribesmen in a thrilling finish, winning by half a canvas (that’s the bit between the bow and the cox). Well done crew!!

I wasn’t there for the rest of the finals but heard on the Killorglin Rowing club grapevine that Monika won the WN18 1X and came 3rd in the WS18 1X. Well done Monika !! The WJ15 4X+ crew came 3rd in their final.

So another successful day at the office for the Killorglin Rowers, well done to everyone who took part… Maeve Mc, Meabh O’S, Kelly, Cliona, Agneiszka, Aishling, Sarah Evans, Aoife Ross, Niamh, Sarah Edwards and Monika.
