Kerry Head Of River Regatta 2009

Snow topped mountains, blue skies and still waters greeted rowers from near and far as they gathered for the Kerry Head Of River regatta 2009 hosted by Killorglin Rowing Club on the banks of the River Laune.

There were lots of clubs visiting including Muckross, Fossa, Workmen, Skibbereen, Bantry, Athlunkard, Castleconnell and St Michael’s and a great day’s competition was had by all. The regatta format was a time trial over a 4 km course from Ballykissane pier finishing at the Killorglin Rowing Club clubhouse and 76 crews competed during the day.

The Killorglin Mens Novice 8 crew, on their first competitive outing, did it in style when they won their event in an excellent time of 13:03 the fastest time of the day for the course.

There were more success stories for Killorglin Rowing club with the Womens Junior 14 4X crew winning their event in a time of 15:41 (which would have also won the WJ15 4X+ as well !),  the WJ15 4X crew were narrowly beaten by Skibbereen who won by 5 seconds.  We also had three crews in the MN4+ and two scullers, Monika and Veronica in the WI 1X events, all of whom clocked good times but these weren’t contested by other clubs.

There was a great contest in the mens masters 8+ category between Castleconnell and St Michael’s with the former winning by a mere 6 seconds with a time of 14:54.

Keeping an eye on the start line!

Many thanks to all the people who helped out, competed or spectated for making this a special day!

Valerie O’Sullivan sent me on her pictures that she took, many thanks!

Roll on the next regatta… stay tuned…
