Killorglin sweep the boards at Galway Regatta 2009
We headed from Coosan Cottage at 7:15am and arrived at NUI Galway at ~ 8:30am for the Galway Regatta 2009. This is a sprint regatta over 750m on the river Corrib in an area known as Menlo Straight. It is a three lane straight section of the river and is excellent for spectators as they can see the whole race unfolding before their eyes.
It is a beautiful location with the ruins of an old castle as a backdrop.
Galway Rowing club gave us a special mention and welcomed us to the regatta as we hadn’t be there for a few years. The main clubs competing were GRC, NUI Galway, Tribesmen, Colaiste Iognaid and City of Derry.
We were competing in three events on the day, the WJ14, WJ15 and WJ16 4X+ and by the end of it had won all three making it a clean sweep for Killorglin Rowing Club, an excellent achievement, well done!
The first heat was the WJ15 which saw Niamh, Aisling, Aileen, Maeve and Agnieszka (cox) compete and win against Colaiste Iognaid and Shannon, and qualify for the finals later in the afternoon.
These were followed by the heats of the WJ14s which had the Killorglin crew of Niamh, Meabh, Caoimhe, Maeve and
Katie (cox) rowing against Colaiste Iognaid which they won and qualified for the finals.
Probably the most exciting race of the day was the WJ16 heat which had Killorglin’s Meabh, Aileen, Caoimhe, Aisling and Agnieszka (cox) against Tribesmen. Killorglin had a good lead coming into the final 100m but Tribemen’s began to gain water stroke by stroke, but Killorglin held on winning by half a canvas to great cheers from the rest of the Killorglin supporters on the river side.
So we were in the finals of all three junior 4X+, not bad for a mornings work!
The first final was the WJ15 final with Killorglin against Colaiste Iognaid and Tribesmen and Killorglin winning.
This was followed by the finals of the WJ14 which saw Killorglin win over Colaiste Iognaid
by a few lengths.
The last final of the day was the WJ16s with Killorglin against
Galway Rowing Club with Killorgin winning by a 1.5 lengths. A great end to a fanstastic days racing for Killorgin Rowing club.
Thanks to Galway Rowing club for hosting a great regatta and special thanks to Patrick for bringing up the trailer of boats and most of all a big well done to the girls of Killorglin Rowing Club!

Athlone Regatta 2009
Killorglin Rowing Club competed in the Athlone Regatta which took place on Sat 13th June 2009. We headed up the night before from Killorglin and arrived at Coosan Cottage guesthouse to be met by our host Tom, who once again looked after us very well!
The regatta takes place on Lough Ree and is over 1000m for juniors. They start at the stake boats and finish half way down the course which makes it difficult to see who’s won (even with the in-famous binoculars
).
Our first race of the morning was Maeve Mc competing in the WJ16 1X in which she rowed excellently winning by 3/4 of a length and qualified for the final later that afternoon.
The heats of the WJ15 4X+ were up next and the crew of Aisling, Meabh, Aileen, Caoimhe and Katie (cox) took to the
water. It was great to see Aileen back again after her Junior Cert exams. The crew rowed very well but were beaten by rival crew Carlow A by 1.5 lengths.
The WJ14 4X+ crew of Niamh, Meabh, Caoimhe, Maeve and Agnieszka (cox) were on a hour later and rowed very well to win their heat by 3 lengths over Cork who also qualified for the final.
There was a three hour wait for the finals and first up were the WJ14 crew who again rowed very well and won over Cork by 4 lengths. Well done girls!
The last final of the day for us was Maeve Mc in the WJ16 1X, Maeve rowed very well and it was excellent that she qualifed for the final.
Later that evening some of the girls availed of some retail therapy whilst others watched Cork beat Kerry in the football
We finished off the day with a lovely meal in Athlone town in preparation for the early start to Galway and the Galway regatta at Menlo Straight.

Carlow Regatta 2009 and Ratzenburg Regatta 2009
Killorglin Rowers headed to the banks of the river Barrow to compete in Carlow Rowing Club’s 150th Anniversary regatta. The conditions were perfect with blue skies and sunshine all day. First up were the MN 4+ crew of Maurice, Martin, Finain and Paul with Deirdre coxing. They had a 10am start for their heat and came through to win it qualifying for their final at 4:40. Veronica was next up at 1:40 in a straight final of the WI 1X (some races including the WS 1X and junior doubles were cancelled due to a lack of time in the schedule). Veronica rowed very well but was beaten by the sculler from Skib.
Next were the heats of the WJ14 and WJ15 4X+.
First up was the WJ14 crew of Maeve, Caoimhe, Meabh, Niamh and Katie coxing. They got through their heat in fine style. Maeve was going to double up in the U15 crew but too much sun the previous day had got the better of her and Niamh stepped in at bow to join up with the crew of Cliodhna, Aisling, Aoife and Agnieszka coxing. This was to be the first of five straight back to back races for Niamh (well done
. The U15 crew got through easily in their first heat to face Clonmel in the next round. The U14s got through their next heat easily as well and faced Carlow in their final which again they won with lengths to spare!
The U15s had a close heat against Clonmel but battled on to get into their final which was also a closely fought contest against Carlow. Carlow on the day winning by about a length.
The MN4+ final was against Commercial and was a very close final as well with Killorglin pulling away in the final 100m to win.
Mary, our tireless secretary, was presented with a commemorative tankard from Carlow Rowing Club who were presenting secretaries in recognition for all their hard work. Mary managed to evade the waiting papparatzi
Well done to all and thanks to Carlow Rowing club for hosting a fantastic regatta.
A big thanks as well to Martin for bringing up the trailer of boats!
As we were busy in Carlow, fellow Killorglin Club rower Monika Dukarska was making headlines at the Ratzenberg regatta winning silver in the Womens Senior double and winning bronze in the women’s senior sculls. Well done Monika! (Thanks to Mike for sending on the news.)
Next stop Blessington
(Photos from Carlow are here…)
