Killorglin sweep the boards at Galway Regatta 2009
June 15, 2009
We headed from Coosan Cottage at 7:15am and arrived at NUI Galway at ~ 8:30am for the Galway Regatta 2009. This is a sprint regatta over 750m on the river Corrib in an area known as Menlo Straight. It is a three lane straight section of the river and is excellent for spectators as they can see the whole race unfolding before their eyes.
It is a beautiful location with the ruins of an old castle as a backdrop.
Galway Rowing club gave us a special mention and welcomed us to the regatta as we hadn’t be there for a few years. The main clubs competing were GRC, NUI Galway, Tribesmen, Colaiste Iognaid and City of Derry.
We were competing in three events on the day, the WJ14, WJ15 and WJ16 4X+ and by the end of it had won all three making it a clean sweep for Killorglin Rowing Club, an excellent achievement, well done!
The first heat was the WJ15 which saw Niamh, Aisling, Aileen, Maeve and Agnieszka (cox) compete and win against Colaiste Iognaid and Shannon, and qualify for the finals later in the afternoon.
These were followed by the heats of the WJ14s which had the Killorglin crew of Niamh, Meabh, Caoimhe, Maeve and
Katie (cox) rowing against Colaiste Iognaid which they won and qualified for the finals.
Probably the most exciting race of the day was the WJ16 heat which had Killorglin’s Meabh, Aileen, Caoimhe, Aisling and Agnieszka (cox) against Tribesmen. Killorglin had a good lead coming into the final 100m but Tribemen’s began to gain water stroke by stroke, but Killorglin held on winning by half a canvas to great cheers from the rest of the Killorglin supporters on the river side.
So we were in the finals of all three junior 4X+, not bad for a mornings work!
The first final was the WJ15 final with Killorglin against Colaiste Iognaid and Tribesmen and Killorglin winning.
This was followed by the finals of the WJ14 which saw Killorglin win over Colaiste Iognaid
by a few lengths.
The last final of the day was the WJ16s with Killorglin against
Galway Rowing Club with Killorgin winning by a 1.5 lengths. A great end to a fanstastic days racing for Killorgin Rowing club.
Thanks to Galway Rowing club for hosting a great regatta and special thanks to Patrick for bringing up the trailer of boats and most of all a big well done to the girls of Killorglin Rowing Club!
