Great success at Athlone and Galway Regattas 2010.

Killorglin Rowing Club had another great outing at Athlone and Galway Regatta this weekend. The club participated in 5 events in Athlone and 10 events in Galway. We had 5 wins out of 5 in Athlone, taking victory in the following categories:

WJ 14 4x+ ( Womens Junior 14 Quad) of Michelle Moriarty, Zoe Hyde, Caoimhe Purcell and Molly O’Sullivan coxed by Katie Fay coming 1,5 boat length ahead of St. Michaels RC and Portora Boat Club. Next to follow was Aileen Crowley taking gold in Womens Junior 16 Single Scull ( WJ 16 1x) beating all of her 21 competitors in this race. Killorglin RC crew of Meabh O’Sullivan, Maeve McGillycuddy, Zoe Hyde and Michelle Moriarty coxed by Katie Fay were outstanding in Womens Junior 15 Quad (WJ 15 4x+) coming first and leaving behind another 10 competitors from clubs like Carlow, Commercial, Portora, Cork or St. Michaels. We also won the Womens Senior Single Scull ( WS 1x)  raced by Monika Dukarska against Marie O’Neil from Cork, two Morans sisters from Offaly and City of Derry. The Womens Intermediate Double ( WI 2x) of Monika Dukarska and Meave McGillycuddy took their first gold together, winning the race by 4 boat lengths against City of Derry and Shandon Rowing Club.

On Sunday morning we drove to Galway to take part in a Sprint Regatta run over 800m. The day was very busy as we participated in 10events often divided into Heats and Finals. Maeve McGillycuddy and Aileen Crowley won their race in Womens Junior 16 Double (WJ 16 2x). The Womens Junior 14 Double (WJ 14 2x) of Michelle Moriarty and Zoe Hyde won their heat coming 2nd in the Final. The Womens Intermediate Double was also won by Killorglin Crew of Monika Dukarska and Maeve McGillycuddy finishing 3 lenghts ahead of City of Derry crew. Womens Junior 14 Quad (WJ 14 4x+) of Michelle Moriarty, Zoe Hyde, Caoimhe  Purcell and Molly O’Sullivan coxed by Katie Fay and Womens Junior 15 Quad (WJ 15 4x+) of Meabh O’Sullivan,Maeve McGillycuddy, Zoe Hyde and Michelle Moriarty coxed by Katie Fay took 1st places comfortably. Womens Novice Single Scull (WN 1x) was won by Aileen Crowley in a close race against Corcoran-O’Hare from Shandon RC. Womens Intermediate Single Scull ( WI 1x) was won by 3 lengths by Monika Dukarska over H.Huges from City of Derry. The Womens Junior 15 Double ( WJ 2x) of Meabh O’Sullivan and Zoe Hyde came 1st in last of the day event. Meabh O’Sullivan came 2nd in Womens Junior 15 Single Scull and Aileen Crowley won her Womens Junior 16 Single Scull Heat. Killorglin Rowing Club came also 2nd in overall Best Club of the Day classification, losing by 7pts with Portora BC.

The rest of Killorglin Rowing Club traveled to Templenoe regatta, where the crew of Maurice Sheehan, Paul Sheehan, Martin Leahy and Sean Hurley coxed by Deirdre O’Donoghue  won the Mens Senior Four race comfortably.

It was a very successful weekend for rowers from Killorglin Rowing Club; our next outing is Fermoy Regatta on Sunday 4th of July.
