Killorglin Rowing Club travelled to the National Indoor Rowing Championships held in Dublin City University on Saturday last. We had a fantastic day winning five medals in 4 different events. Four girls out of six were competing in the events that were part of Irish National Selection Process for 2011 season. All of the four girls were well within the qualifying times even though there was sickness in the camp leading up and indeed on the day of the event. It was a weekend for the brave hearted as the weather and travelling conditions were nearly impossible but not for these girls. The club competed in Junior13, Junior14, Junior16, Junior18 and Under23 categories.
The first medal winner of the day was Emma Murphy in Under13 category that recently joined the club. Coach Mike Fleming was very impressed with Emma’s performance on her first day out for the club and is looking forward to 2011 season. Molly O’Sullivan also won a medal in this age category.
Zoe Hyde took an impressive first in Under14 category leading the races from start to finish. She also was inside the qualifying Irish junior time so is looking good to join the other girls in the club for Irish Junior Squad 2011.
Aileen Crowley picked up a medal in the Under18 category even though she is under18 for another 2 years.
Maeve McGillycuddy was winning her race at 1500meter mark but unfortunately picked up a cramp in her leg and couldn’t finish the race but Maeve is already a part of Irish Junior Squad.
Monika Dukarska who is on the Irish High Performance Senior Squad got well inside the qualifying time, picking up a medal even though suffering from a virus.
Well done to all the athletes. Next part on the Irish national selection process will take place in Newry on February next. It will consist of erg test and water assessment over 5 km, so not a lot of rest for these girls over the Christmas period as the season is just beginning.
