Newry Erg and Water Assessment February 2011

Athletes from the Club took part in the National Selection Process to Irish Team for season 2011. Unfortunately two of our junior rowers didn’t part take due to injury picked up few days before the event. Zoe Hyde and Monika Dukarska together with Cian and Cathal Clifford participated in the 2000m ergometer test on Saturday last. All of the athletes managed to get their PB’s (Personal Best) on the Erg. Monika Dukarska finished with time 6:58.9, Cian Clifford 6:46, Cathal Clifford 6:43 and Zoe Hyde with time of 7:59.8min. It was Zoe’s, Cian’s and Cathal’s first time at the National Trials in Newry making it even more exciting. All athletes except Cian, that missed the cut off point for Under 23 Lightweight Men by just a second – even though he is only 19, qualified for second assessment over 5km stretch of water on Sunday.

There was 100 rowers allowed to row in the Newry Canal from all over Ireland. The race started at 11 am with rowers aligned from number 1 to 100. Cathal Clifford finished well up the ranks with the Lightweight Men. Monika Dukarska finished 2nd in the Heavyweight U23’s Women Single Sculls and Zoe finished her row in great style. Zoe took part in Under 16 event even though she is still Under14. Well done to all participants and we look forward to the final stage of selection process in April. Special congratulations to Zoe as she was one of the youngest competitions and she faces the challenge with great enthusiasm and competitiveness.

Our next event is Cork HOR on the 19th of February followed by National 4 Blades HOR on the 26th.
