The Dublin Metropolitan Regatta 2011

The Metropolitan Regatta held on Blessington Lake in Dublin have been rescheduled due to bad weather forecasts. The grand league event have been moved to Saturday 4th of June. Killorglin Rowing Club was represented by  two athletes – Monika Dukarska and Maeve Mcgillycuddy  due to fundraising event planned for Friday and Saturday. The girls represented the Club proudly, winning a gold medal in the Women Senior Double Scull and Women Senior Single Scull. The girls teamed up to race the Women Senior Double Scull event in the morning. There was 5 competitors in the race with two Skibbereen, Commercial and Old Collegians crews. The race was very tight with 4 crews passing the 1,500 meter mark together. The Killorglin girls increased the distance between them and other competitors in the last 300m of the race crossing the line with a half of the boat length lead over Skibbereen A crew. The Old Collegians crew came 3rd with Skibbereen B  4th  and Commercial RC coming 5th.  The girls got time of 7min and 20 seconds.

Next to go was Monika Dukarska in the Women Senior Single Scull. Monika had to race a heat and a final due to bigger number of entries. She won the heat comfortably with big lead over Skibbereen, UCD and Offaly RC scullers. The draw for the final was based on the times got in the previous heats. The final draw consisted of Killorglin and three Skibbereen athletes. The weather conditions deteriorated for the evening final with strong cross winds and waves. Monika raced the 2,000m with a lead from the start, increasing the gap towards the finish of the race. She won the race with time of 7min and 51seconds.

It was a great achievement for the girls to win both Senior events at this grand league regatta. It is the girls second time winning the Senior Double and they are the favourites to win this event at the Irish Championships in July.

Well done!
