Killorglin Rowing Club had an outstanding weekend winning six events at one of the biggest rowing weekends in the calendar. Killorglin athletes took part in University and School Championships on Saturday and Skibbereen Regatta on Sunday last. Intermediate School Killorglin was represented by group of 12 athletes who proudly wore the I.S.K colours. Women’s Junior 15 Quad of Emma Murphy, Zoe Hyde, Molly Sullivan and Kerri Fay coxed by Katie Fay won their heat and final comfortably, leaving no doubt in spectators minds that they are the strongest junior15 crew around. Girls won their final with ease with schools like Mercy Heights Secondary School, Laural Hill Limerick and St. Brigid’s Secondary School Killarney finishing well behind the winners. Girls also took the Women’s Junior 16 title after tight heat, opening 150m gap in the final over Colaiste Iognaid RC and Christ King School in Cork .
Men’s Junior 15 quad of Connor Dee, Robert Shaw, Kieran O’Sullivan and John F O’Grady coxed by Katie Fay raced exceptionally well with a great win in their heat against Colaiste Chiarain RC, CBS Clonmel and Presentation College Cork schools. However boy’s ran out of steam during the final and lost by a margin finishing 3rd overall. Men’s Junior 16 quad of Connor Dee, Robert Shaw, Kieran O’Sullivan and Matthew O’Connor coxed by Katie Fay finished 3rd qualifying for final later on that day and finishing 6th in the final. Maeve McGillycuddy and Tara Lynch finished 4th in the Women’s Open Double Scull final.
Monika Dukarska makes it three in a row in the Women’s Senior Sculls at University Championships. Monika moved to 300m lead over Trinity and CIT scullers on the day. Monika is the top Under-23 rower in Ireland at the moment, impatiently awaiting her Irish passport in order to represent Ireland at World’s Under23s and other international regattas in 2012.
Skibbereen Regatta on the other hand brought few surprises with boys crews making history for Killorglin Rowing Club. The Men’s Junior 15 Quad of Connor Dee, Robert Shaw, Kieran O’Sullivan and John F O’Grady coxed by Matthew O’Connor won their final by a boat length against St. Joseph’s College RC, Clonmel and Shannon. Robert Shaw topped it up by winning his Men’s Junior 15 single scull title over six other competitors. Well done boys!
Women’s Junior 15 quad of Emma Murphy, Zoe Hyde, Molly Sullivan and Kerri Fay coxed by Katie Fay won their final again, with enormous lead over Skibbereen, Carlow St. Michaels and Shandon RC. Zoe Hyde won the Women’s Junior 15 single scull with Dearbhail Ryan finishing second close by. It was great to see both girls so competitive and performing so well.
Women’s Junior 16 quad of Emma Murphy, Zoe Hyde, Ali Sullivan and Molly Sullivan coxed by Katie Fay finished 2nd to Galway Rowing Club making it a great race.
Big thanks to all parents that helped out on the day and our coach Mike Fleming. Also thanks to Nicole Ryan for support on the day. Our next regatta is Queen’s Regatta on 28th of April in Castlewellen Co. Down. Well done to our great rowers. Great results and it’s just a beginning of the season 2012.
