Queen’s University Regatta 2012

Castlewellan Co. Down was a very busy venue with 410 crews entered in Queen’s University Regatta , the second Grand League Regatta of 2012. Killorglin Rowing Club had 10 crews entered competing in races ranging from women’s senior single scull to men’s junior 14 double scull. Athletes travelled to Co. Down on Friday afternoon, with races starting at 7:30am on Saturday. First off was Matthew O’Connor in the Men’s Junior 16 single scull. Matthew finished 3rd in his heat and 3rd in his  final.

Monika Dukarska competed in the Women’s Senior 1x with a very high quality field of ex-world medalists including Sinead Jennings and Holly Nixon. Monika won the final with half of a boat length lead over Nixon of Portora RC, the world junior silver medalist from 2011. Monika got off with a clean start and sat on Nixon until 100m to go when she changed gears and went for gold. It was undoubtedly a race of a day and Monika turned the crowd into a frenzy with excitement.

Boys stole the show finishing 1st in the Men’s Junior 15 quad. The crew of Connor Dee, Robert Shaw, Kieran O’Sullivan and John Francis O’Grady coxed by Matthew O’Connor opened a 2,5 boat length lead over Methodists and Commercial RC winning their final in style. MJ14 double of Kieran O’Sullivan and John Francis O’Grady repeated the performance and won their race against Commercial Rowing Club.

Zoe Hyde raced the WJ15 single scull opening a great lead over Commercial RC sculler and making it two in a row in Grand League Regattas. Dearbhail Ryan finished 3rd in the same race.

The crew of Molly Sullivan, Zoe Hyde, Emma Murphy and Kerri Fay coxed by Katie Fay raced the Women’s Junior 16 quad winning their heat comfortably. Girls raced against experienced  junior 16 quad from Galway RC loosing just by 5seconds in the final and finishing 2nd overall. Well done girls, great achievement. Robert Shaw and Connor Dee raced MJ15 single sculls finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively. The WJ15 quad of Emma Murphy, Zoe Hyde, Alexandria O’Sullivan and Dearbhail Ryan coxed by Katie Fay took a hit from Galway RC and Skibbereen Rowing Club finishing 33rd in the final.

Well done to all winners and all athletes that competed at Queen’s University Regatta. Our next event is Limerick Regatta on 12th of May 2012.
