Castleconnell Sprints 2012

Clean sweep for Killorglin athletes.

Castleconnell Sprints on Sunday 10th of June saw some fine racing and surprisingly nice weather. Killorglin Rowing Club athletes started off well with Women’s Novice Quad of Molly Sullivan, Ali O’Sullivan, Kerri Fay and Dearbhail Ryan coxed by Katie Fay winning their heat comfortably. Dearbhail Ryan continued the success, winning her heat in the Women’s Novice Single, qualifying for final later on the day. The first win of the day however went to Women’s Junior 15 quad of Molly Sullivan, Zoe Hyde, Kerri Fay and Dearbhail Ryan coxed by Katie Fay. The girls had a great start and opened up a boat length and a half lead over St. Michaels Rowing Club from Limerick. This win gave the girls additional 10 points in the Waterways Ireland competition.

Robert Shaw raced in the Men’s Junior 15 single scull finishing first in the heat, however missing out in the final and placing third overall. Zoe Hyde won the Women’s Junior 15 single scull with ease, repeating the great performance once again in the women’s junior 16 single scull. Zoe raced hard from the start, passing out other competitors shortly after coming off the stake boats. Kerri Fay joined Zoe in the double and competed in the under15 double scull event. After winning the heat girl qualified into the final, winning it comfortably against Fermoy and St. Michaels crews. Killorglin girls continued their winning streak with winning the Women’s Junior 16 quad of Molly Sullivan, Zoe Hyde, Ali Sullivan and Kerri Fay coxed by Katie Fay. Girls stole the show at Castleconnell regatta winning 5 out of 7 events they were entered in.

Boys fought hard against fine competition in the Men’s Junior 15 category. The Men’s Junior 15 quad of Connor Dee, Robert Shaw, Kieran O’Sullivan and John F O’Grady, missed out by less than a boat length to Shannon crew that took the lead from the start and kept other crews behind successfully. Boys brought the rate up towards the finish, gaining the distance on winners however the race was too short to recover. Kieran O’Sullivan and John F O’Grady took part in the Men’s Junior 14 double scull and won the race at the last 50m. Boys raced in a close enough race, opening a lead towards the closing meters of the race. Killorglin athletes won 6 races overall, making it a successful day for all.
