National Rowing Championships Day 1 – Friday

Officially the hottest day so far this year made for close racing in the heat. Nearly all our races so far this year, we have been complaining of the windy, blustery conditions…but not so today.

First off was Zoe and Dearbhail in the Junior Ladies (u18) Double scull, which the comfortably qualified for their final, finishing 2nd in their heat. They were followed an hour or so later by with Boys U16 Quad (Kieran in stroke, followed by Rob, John Francis and Connor, with Shane coxing). They had a very tough draw in the heat, meeting the two quads that had beaten them in Schools and Skibereen Regatta (Colaiste Ioghnaid and Cork Boat Club). The boys pushed all the way to the line, and missed out a place in the final, which was won by Cork, by 5 seconds. It was great to see such an improvement in their performance since they last met these crews.

Next up was Monika in a Composite crew with Skibereen in the Senior Ladies 4. This was tipped in the press to be one of the closest races of the day, and it proved that way. Both boats were neck and neck all the way, but Cork/NUIG won in a time of 7.33.22, followed by Monikas crew of 7.33.52!

Zoe and Dearbhail were last of the Killorglin crews racing today.   Their Final was a fast one, the girls performed well, and gave it their all but werent placed. They still have two more years for this age group so plenty of time to challenge for the title.
Good luck to our crews tomorrow (see below list)
