All Ireland Coastal Rowing Championship 2014

Killorglin Rowing Club proved to be outstanding at the All Ireland Coastal Rowing Championship held in Waterville, Co. Kerry. Nineteen crews headed to Waterville with great expectations and hopes. As a result of hard training and dedication Killorglin hauled home six golds, one silver and one bronze. Saturday went well with eight crews qualifying to finals on Sunday. Crews who narrowly missed out on qualifying were as follows U14 girls, U16 girls and U18 girls and unfortunately, the intermediate men were disqualified in their heat for clashing oars with Fossa. For many, this was their first year rowing but everyone showed great spirit in their performance.
Racing started early Sunday morning and the first win for Killorglin was the Senior Mixed crew who dominated the race from start to finish. Another win followed swiftly, this time a silver medal to the U18 crew who were rowing above their age category. Next up was the U14 boys who fought a hard battle for third place. The U21 ladies crew added another gold to the bag, beating the previous winners Ring. U21 CupTwo crews represented Killorglin in the U12 girls final, both crews rowed strong however they met tough competition on the day, it’s a great learning experience for these young girls. The U16 boys had a great performance in the U21 race however they faced tougher and older competition and finished 6th. Killorglin had two crews in the pre-veteran men’s race, with the A crew having more experience they eased to first place and the B crew had a fantastic race for their first year of rowing. It was finally time for the U16 boys to row in their respective category and with two races behind them and one silver, the boys secured first place comfortably.U14 and U16 boys The senior ladies crew faced local rivals Sneem in their race, however, the girls proved to be unbeatable and placed first. Senior Ladies Next to row was the junior men, with three U16 boys in the boat fourth place is an impressive result. Sunday finished like it started with an extraordinary win from the Senior Men’s A crew. In the final race of the weekend, the A crew commanded from the start and extended their lead by a country mile, the B crew also had a marvellous race, however they just missed out on third place.
