Another regatta season is underway! With little to no racing done over the winter months due to adverse weather, we are excited to travel to Dublin and compete in two events, the Naptune and Commercial regattas on Saturday and Sunday, the 2nd and 3rd of April. The events are held over 1,200m on the River Liffey, Islandbridge with a large number of entries in underage and senior categories. The races are side by side with two crews competing at a time, with the winner taking it all and progressing further in the competition, through to quarterfinals, semifinals and eventually reaching the final.
The crews out on Saturday are as follow: the Women’s Junior 15 doubles of Mara Treacy and Molly O’Grady and the second crew of Anna Tyther and Rhiannon O’Donoghue. The girls will race Carlow Rowing Club and Castleconnell Boat Club respectively.
Michael O’Connor and Sean Houlihan have only one event to focus on during the weekend and that is the Men’s Junior 16 double scull. The boys will aim to position themselves as the leaders in this boat category from the start of the 2016 regatta season. They will race Portora Boat Club in their heat.
The Women’s Junior 15 Quad consists of Mara Treacy, Rhiannon O’Donoghue, Anna Tyther, Hannah Joy and Alanna Dolan. This is their first competitive outing in this crew combination and the girl will race against either the Portadown B.C. or Graiguenamanagh RC, depending on who wins that race earlier in the day.
Marie O’Connor is taking on the nation in the Women’s Club Single scull, having raced the single scull in 2015 and winning a number of Head of the River events.
This time, we have also an entry in the Women’s Senior Single Scull with Monika Dukarska returning to represent Killorglin in this boat category. Monikia will race Garda B.C in the heat in the morning. Monika made a decision to put everything on one card and has set her sight on the single scull boat for the 2016 rowing season and beyond. Monika finished second at the National trials after approx. 6 weeks in the single and now is competing in this event category nationally and all being well, also internationally later on in the season.
The same crews are racing again on Sunday in the Commercial Regatta.
Best of luck to all the crews and safe journey to our athletes and supporters.
