Congratulations to Monika, World Champion of the women’s solo (single) at the World Coastal Rowing Championships 2016! What an achievement.
Monika Dukarska was crowned the new World Champion of the women’s solo (single) at the World Coastal Rowing Championships in Monaco on Saturday, the dominant winner of the 6km final race. This is Monika’s second World title, having won the same title for the first time in 2009 when the Championships were held in Britain. The Killorglin rower had over 26 seconds to spare over Greek international Alexandra Tsiavou who finished second. Tsiavou took bronze in the lightweight double sculls at the Olympic Games in 2012.
The Championships saw a record number of entries this year, with nearly 700 athletes from 30 nations competing.
Earlier this year, Dukarska also took bronze at the World University Championships in the women’s single sculls. Her next goal is to compete in the Irish Indoor Rowing Championships in January, but long term she has her sights set on the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Congratulations to Monika, and her coach Michael Fleming, on this fantastic achievement from all at Rowing Ireland!
