The hottest weekend of 2017 brings about the first Grand League Regatta of the season! If you thought over 300 crews competing is a lot, this weekend 637 crews will take to the water at the National Rowing Centre in Inniscarra, Co. Cork.
Racing takes place over two days, Saturday and Sunday and runs from 11am to 7pm on Saturday and 8:30am to 3pm on Sunday.
All races except for junior 15 and junior 14, which are straight finals over 1500m and 1000m respectively are run over 2000m distance and are side by side. Each race will have a maximum of 6 competitions racing as fast as possible over the distance. The time alone will decide the fastest 6 that will go to final A and so on.
First off for the Club is Monika Dukarska in the heat of the Women’s Senior Single Scull. That race kicks off at 11:31am where Monika faces Sanita Puspure, Irish Rio Olympian. The final of that race is scheduled to take place at 2:15pm.
The Women’s Junior 16 quad of Mara Treacy, Rhiannon O’Donoghue, Molly O’Grady and anna Tyther coxed by Alanna Dolan and the Women’s Club quad of Eimear O’Donovan, Anna Griffin, Jessica Lee, Katie Boyle coxed by Airida Mateviciute race at 12:15 and 12:23 respectively. The J16 girls face competition from Muckross, Skibbereen, Flesk Valley, Workmens, Carlow and Tralee Rowing Clubs, while the Club quad takes on crews from Cork, Lee, Garda and Lee Rowing Clubs.
Next out is James McCarthy at 12:27 in the Men’s Junior 18A single scull. James starts in lane 3 with 22 entries in his event.
Airida Mateviciute hopes to defend her title in the Women’s Junior 14 single that she earned at Commercial Regatta. Airida races at 13:40. There are 10 entries in this event.
The day concludes with the Women’s Junior 16 eights race, The crew of Mara Treacy, Rhiannon O’Donoghue, Anna Tyther, Anna Griffin, Katie Boyle, Molly O’Grady, Alanna Dolan and Emma Houlihan coxed by Eimear O’Donovan faces stiff competition from Lee and Coláiste Iognáid, Galway Clubs.
Sunday kicks off with James McCarthy racing the Men’s Junior 18 B single sculls race at 8:58am followed by Alanna Dolan racing the Women’s Junior 15 Single scull final against Shandon, Cappoquin, Skibbereen, Cork and Castleconnell clubs. That race is scheduled to take place at 10:05am.
The final race of the regatta for us is the Women’s Junior 15 quad of Alanna Dolan, Anna Griffin, Katie Boyle, Emma Houlihan coxed by Mara Treacy at 12:10pm. The competitors include Lee, Workmans, Carlow, Castleconnell clubs.
