Tyther and O’Donoghue take Inniscarra lake by storm (CORK REGATTA – Day I)

Two medals for Killorglin RC on the first day of Cork Regatta at the National Rowing Centre, Farran Woods, Co. Cork. First medal went to the very talented under 12 sculler, Airida Mateviciute, who won the final of the Women’s Junior 14 single sculls.

The crew of the day was Anna Tyther and Rhiannon O’Donoghue who raced 4 superb races, wining them all with clear water advantage over the rest of the competition.

First the girl cruised through the heat of the Women’s Junior 18 pair but unfortunately missed out on the place in the A final, where 6 fastest boats across all senior, intermediate, club and junior 18 pair categories were placed. One Junior 18 pair got ahead of the two Killorglin rowers, subsequently winning the junior 18 category. Nevertheless, the girls won the B Final with the fastest time across all junior 18 pair boats, placing them 2nd overall in this highly competitive event.

Later in the afternoon, Anna and Rhiannon won the heat of the Women’s Junior 18 B heat and repeated their undeniably strong and dominant performance in the final – leading the race by some 300m of clear water. The girls had 15 seconds to space over New Ross crew (Club 2 double) and 21 seconds to the next Junior 18 B crew. What a performance!
Sean Houlihan secured another 2nd place for the club in the heat of the Men’s Junior 18 single sculls producing a fast finish and tracking closely behind first. This performance however wasn’t fast enough to make the Final, the result put Sean 12th overall in this race category.

Olivia Moriarty (J14), Laoise Murphy (J14), Katie Boyle (J16) and Marcus Lavery (J14) raced single scull events in their respective age categories, finishing 3rd, 5th, 5th and 5th respectively.

Jessica Lee and Celine Kavanagh raced the Women’s Masters single sculls finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively. Well done ladies!

Well done to all the rowers, Michael Fleming – our Head Coach so far and best of luck to all on the second day of Cork regatta tomorrow.

Big thanks to all the mom’s & supporters of the Club for providing food and refreshments throughout the day!
